Masculinity V's Singularity

Ok - so I made a decision this morning that I was going to do one thing every day for the next week to change my life for good... Here is the Monday effort...

I am having difficulty making a decision. So I have decided to start two blogs...

My name is Steven. I am currently a student doing my Post Graduate Masters Degree at the University of Melbourne. I enjoy my study very much but I am caught between two areas of study for my PhD.

There is Hegemonic Masculinity... A social theory which proposes that a culturally normative in males is to dominate over other males and suppress females.

There is the Technological Singularity... A point in the future where accelerated change will come about because of the exponential growth of computer processing speed.

Both of these topics fascinate me. I enjoy the challenges each present... But toward the end of the year, I must decide which area is going to be the one!

I was watching Julie & Julia the other day with my partner and the story-line made me smile. One woman creates a blog and her life changes. Nice thought! Here determination to change her life through her own efforts is something to which most of us can relate...

As I enjoy writing very much, I thought it would be an idea to blog my thoughts about each of the topics on a weekly basis until I have to submit my application for the PhD. Will the 'Singularity' win out over the 'Masculinity' or vice versa?

I had coffee with my good friend Allyson the other day and it really did put me in a good mood. It had nothing to do with the 5 hours of catchup... 15 cups of coffee... and 5 slices of date loaf... We had discussed these options and it cleared the path for me until... I arrived back home and commenced working on an assignment...

So, in a nut shell... each week, I am going to post on this blog about the Hegemonic Masculinity and how it is affecting my life and why I want to study it for my PhD...

The battle commences... play fair...

If you have any comments - please feel free to make them...

Have a good week
Cheers
Steven
